As artificial intelligence (AI) applications proliferate the opportunities for integrating them into our daily lives keep growing. Convenience, time saving and enhanced productivity are some of the most common benefits.
These apps, or agents, as they’re increasingly known as, can be digital assistants, making suggestions and, if you ask, decisions. Many of the early examples already do so, but in the background – algorithms push music, news, images and other content to our devices based on our past preferences. Quite a few focus on time management, personal finance, health and smart home living. And like a lot of digital innovations that we’re weaving into our daily routines they typically charge a monthly fee.
Note that the apps mentioned below are a small sample of a rapidly growing field and are not a recommendation or endorsement.
Time management and task automation
If your time is a valuable, AI can help automate tasks and manage schedules. Apps such as Calendly, Notion AI, and Microsoft 365 Copilot can organize meetings, set reminders and prioritize tasks.1
- Calendar assistants can resolve scheduling conflicts by analyzing availability and suggesting optimal times. Predictive analytics lets you see possible delays or rebook commitments proactively.
- Chatbots and virtual assistants such as ChatGPT and Google Assistant can handle routine communications, write emails, and manage to-do lists. Handing off repetitive or administrative tasks can free up your time for higher-level decisions and work – or leisure.
- AI can rank tasks by importance and deadline. Productivity apps such as Todoist adapt to your work habits and priorities to make recommendations. 2
Budgeting
Managing our money can be simple, complex, or anywhere in between, but the baseline is what we earn and what – and how – we spend.
- Apps such as YNAB (You Need A Budget), Pocketguard and Copilotmoney, to name just a few, analyze your spending patterns and can make recommendations for managing cash flow more effectively. Ironically, a popular feature in some is the ability to manage (and cancel) your digital subscriptions, a well-known but silent cash drain. 3
Health
Health is a focus for many individuals of all ages. For those in full career mode maximizing workout efficiency can be important. For those planning rewarding retirements filled with travel, family and new adventures, good health will determine just how much we can do. AI agents are increasingly equipped to provide customized solutions to improve your physical and mental well-being at any age.
- Wireless-enabled wearables like the Apple Watch and Google’s Fitbit use algorithms to track health metrics, including your heart rate, sleep patterns, and activity levels. Products such as WHOOP collect and analyze granular, 24/7 data on your sleep quality, physical strain and recovery to develop messages advising on your overall physical well-being at a given point. Recovery data includes your HRV (heart rate variability), your RHR (resting heart rate) and your respiratory rate. 4
- Platforms like the Peloton Guide provide customized workout plans based on user preferences and performance. AI-enabled cameras hooked to your TV screen monitor your workouts and refine your personalized exercise programs by analyzing your performance metrics.
- Virtual diagnostic apps such as Ada Health provide health assessments and medical advice. These are not substitutes for professional medical attention but can offer a preliminary analysis of potential conditions based on the symptoms you input. As you enter more data and symptoms, the app develops a custom profile and can make other healthcare suggestions. 5
Smart homes and lifestyle
A range of AI-enabled agents focus on various aspects of your personal environment, providing you with convenience, control and data.
- Platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home integrate with smart home systems to control lighting, heating, and security systems. The apps learn user preferences over time, creating personalized environments. Similarly, tools such as Nest Thermostat and Ecobee optimize energy use by analyzing patterns and adjusting temperatures accordingly, producing cost savings and aiding sustainability.
- Familiar names like Sonos, Spotify and Netflix curate and provide music and media based on your preferences and history.
- At the higher end systems such as Crestron Home offer bespoke solutions combining control of multi-zone lighting, window coverings, heating, cooling, media and comprehensive security systems in a single platform.
- On a more personal level, ChatGPT can create weekly meal plans and grocery lists for you and your family. Taking it a step further, its Advanced Voice Mode can guide you through preparing a recipe it suggests and give tips in real time as you cook based on your feedback. 6
- Style DNA will help you select new clothing by analysing photos you upload of your current wardrobe plus a scan of your face. And then if you upload an image of a potential purchase, it will tell you if it’s a good match for you.
Travel
Travel is booming, particularly in the luxury segment. AI tools can help simplify your planning with recommendations, concierge-like services and reduce foreign language barriers.
- Apps such as Kayak AI and Google Travel help users discover optimal flight routes, accommodations and itineraries. AI powered chatbots can answer questions and AI-enabled systems analyze preferences and historical data to make personalized recommendations.
- Translation apps such as Google Translate can help you navigate the basic communication needs of foreign travel. Examples include signs – just point your camera and it translates what you’re looking at – and live translation of what you’re hearing. You can also download a language ahead of time when you expect to be off the beaten track with no internet access.
AI is becoming a bigger part of our lives. There are growing opportunities for using it to be more productive, efficient and informed. But these apps are mostly available for a monthly fee and typically require sharing varying degrees of personal information, factors to weigh when you consider integrating any AI app into your life.
